New York City

NY is a city to dress for, and with it comes a respect for fine dining. Chefs can’t show enough love for restaurants such as Le Bernardin, Del Posto, Daniel, Per Se and Marea. (The message is loud and clear: Do not miss Marea’s fusilli with octopus and bone marrow.) This is not to say that the chefs behind these upscale restaurants don’t like to get their hands dirty. Michael White—the genius behind the fusilli—loves a good banh mi and Mario Batali of Del Posto gets his carnitas fix at Dos Toros. And after a hard day’s night, there’s always this fallback: a bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll from a corner deli. As chef Marco Canora of Hearth puts it: “In NY, this ubiquitous sandwich is cheap, delicious, and really unhealthy. I’ve never had a bad one.”

Oxtail fried rice

"This is a dish I constantly crave. In addition to the oxtail, the dish has bone marrow served inside an egg crepe and you mix it all up with chili paste. Complex flavors in a rustic, soulful dish."

Lobster roll

@ Mary’s Fish Camp

"There are a few dishes that I tell friends of mine visiting from out of town that they have to try while in the city, but I always find myself recommending late lunch in the West Village at Mary’s Fish Camp. Mainly because that’s where I want to spend a day off, and I always end up at Mary’s for a bomb lobster roll. It’s coated, not covered, in a lobster mayo, with a little bit of celery, scallions, and stuffed into a top cut bun that’s been toasted in butter. Sweet chunks of meat, crunchy veggies, soft roll. Legendary, still."

"Perfect pastas with the best polenta in New York, all served with immaculate service and a well-rounded wine list. The creamy polenta with fricassée of truffled mushrooms is a must-order. Its rich mushroom sauce is great to dip bread into once the polenta is gone. Also, the short rib and bone marrow agnolotti, with crisp garlic chips and fresh horseradish, is not to be missed."
