About Astro Robles
AstroMaria Robles was born in Guatemala City. For nearly 20 years, I worked in the world of advertising, but I felt something was missing. In 2006, after receiving a family cookbook from my mother-in-law, and the encouragement from friends to share her delicious meals with others, I decided to attend the French Haute Cuisine at Camille Cooking School in Guatemala City, where I received the titles of Professional Cook and Pastry Cook. I worked at Camille and other international restaurants in Guatemala. In 2008, studied Thai cuisine in Thailand at The Blue Elephant Restaurant and Cooking School, at which worked for some time during her stay in the country. In 2009, me and my husband, Yemil, opened KhawpKhunKha in Guatemala, the first and only authentic Thai restaurant in the country. The restaurant offers a menu of classic Thai food alongside fusion dishes and cocktails of her own creation. The restaurant has been growing steadily over the past 5 years, and has been taking the Guatemalan food scene by storm with many mentions in food and travel publications in Guatemala. In 2014, me along with my husband, Yemil and our 3 year old daughter, Dominica, moved to NYC to start up weekly supper club parties, called elcochinito nyc, in our apartment. This is the beginning of a big project of personal and professional growth, as I'm looking to open a restaurant in NYC in the future. When asked what draws me to cooking, I say "I love cooking because I love to eat. I like to see people's emotions when they eat great food, and I get really excited when my food evokes these emotions in my customers."
