Cara Akselrad and Dave Kirschner are collaborating to create what they are calling The Modern Shabbat. Cara, an actress, singer and producer, is the face and organizer of the event, and Dave, former executive chef at Tasting Table and owner of dineDK, is head chef. Together, they hope to elevate the culinary expectations of the Shabbat meal while also exposing their table to those who might be unfamiliar with the Shabbat experience. With the support of StartUp Shabbat, they will host a modern Shabbat menu full of great flavors in a venue that is warm and inviting; just like them. More on these two...Cara Akselrad was a born hostess. Whether on stage, on set or in her home. she thrives on welcoming others and making them feel at ease. She is thrilled to combine her love of food, her love of fun and her family roots into one special evening. Like his partner, David has known his calling from birth - that of a chef. Memories of family centered around the kitchen table where his mother had fresh food out every night and his bubby making homemade kreplach, pierogi, and other Ashkenazi Jewish delights have influenced his devotion to “from scratch” cooking and food as a focal point of life. After earning his degree in culinary nutrition at Johnson & Wales University, David quickly ascended the ranks of both New Jersey and New York City restaurants. Following an internship at Per Se in New York, David accepted a Chef de Partie position with Michael Mina to open SeaBlue at the Borgata in Atlantic City. Over the next few years he worked and opened two more restaurants with The Mina Group. David was then tapped to open and assume the role of Executive Sous Chef at Daryl Wine Bar in New Brunswick, NJ and the next year the restaurant earned a James Beard nomination for “Best New Restaurant in America”. Not one to rest on his laurels, David pushed himself further when he accepted a Sous Chef position at Zylo at the W Hotel in Hoboken, NJ. After just one year, he was named Chef de Cuisine of the property and was a featured chef at the NJ Food and Wine festival. It was here at Zylo that David honed his craft, making seasonal fresh pastas, working with local farmers, and modernizing rustic Italian cooking; the very skills he first nurtured at his bubby’s side. David made the move back to New York City when he accepted a position at Bar Boulud, Daniel Boulud’s French bistro. In short time, he became a Sous Chef and then Private Dining Chef, where he oversaw all banquet operations for Bar Boulud and Boulud Sud. In 2012, David joined the food media company Tasting Table to run their private dining loft in Soho. It was here that all of David’s culinary experiences came together. He established his “market” cuisine, entertained company clients, and was crucial in conceptualizing events with partner brands. Today, David owns and runs dineDK, a boutique private event company that specializes in custom culinary experiences. dineDK.com is David’s platform for showcasing his commitment to seasonal, “market” inspired cooking, working with local farmers, and cultivating intimate events in order to elevate his clients’ culinary and entertainment needs.
