Ask a Scientist: What If The Dude Was Vegan?

White Russians, sans dairy.

July 19, 2017

Q: What are some good dairy alternatives for a White Russian?

A: So many ideas! Basically, anything vegan and creamy would work great. You could go for a quick 1:1 swap with an unflavored nut milk like coconut or cashew. For those, I’d go with one of the brands that add guar gum or some other carb for the extra creaminess (if you get down like that). Tiger nut milk, in particular, would be amazing — it’s the base for horchata, and we’re finally getting good versions of it in U.S. grocery stores. Plus, you get to say “tiger nut” a bunch.

Not sure if this would be gross, but I’ve always wanted to try boba (tapioca pearls) in a white Russian, and the added thickening power from the tapioca would help to get you one step closer to true dairy creaminess.
