It's the season of sun, of sweat, of tomatoes splitting at their seams. It's cold drinks with slick surfaces and dinners fit for breezy nights, of free form reprieves from the calculated larders of winter. It's the season of standing inches away from the air conditioner (if you're blessed enough to have one), of fanning your sticky face with restaurant menus while you wait for a server to rescue you with icy water.
In summer, food morphs into something unabashedly erotic. Everything melts and drips and offers up sweet flesh; every bite tastes like the final frame of one of those sped-up nature videos—petals exploding forth in a bang of color and silent noise. We make big plans for our summers, even if our pesky jobs don't come with summer breaks. The things we'll eat! The people we'll eat those things with! The tans we'll get while eating those things with those people!
