"I realized recently that I’ve been teaching people about the healing benefits of a plant based diet/herbal healing for a decade. . . I come from a lineage of strong women. Both my mother and my grandmother were teachers. Growing up I never would have thought that I would be teaching people anything. Turns out, it’s kind of in my blood! . . "Years ago I connected back to my inner kitchen witch and I’ve never looked back. . . Witches were feared for their ability to help their community members heal with plants as though using magic. And feared because they lived on the fringes of society, not conforming to the norm. Fast forward to today and you still see the fear of the “witch” so strong in our society. Men and women healing people in their community with herbs and plants such as cannabis, which has been villainized by people in power. In fact, just a few days ago our Attourney General was quoted as saying “good people don’t smoke marijuana”. . . I personally know an MD on the East coast with a history of healing hundreds of people with the use of herbs and cannabis. Like healed of cancer. Like changed their life. Is she a bad person? Are the people using the cannabis to heal themselves bad people? Ya, that would be NO. The programming coming from our government and people in power is strong. Programmed people are easier to control. A confident free thinker is not and that scares the shit out of people in power. . . How does this fit in with a picture of butternut squash? Because I’m making it with healing herbs and black sesame, to protect my family’s immune system and nourish our adrenals. Tonight we will have this along with herbal tea to support our liver, soup made with so many healing foods it’s basically medicine and we will all have some elderberry tincture tonight before bed to ward off the flu going around. THIS is what my version of a kitchen witch is. And I’m f#cking proud to be one 🔥🐺✨🌲. "What’s in your cup these days? . . For the past two months I’ve been consistently drinking chaga tea. I brew it with a bit of vanilla bean and a cinnamon stick. I let it simmer for 3 hours on the stove and then store in the fridge in jars so I can quickly grab on the go. So, what I’ve noticed since starting this chaga journey is that my immune system is stronger. Even with sleep deprivation and with my body needing to replenish after giving birth and nursing, I am feeling energized and I have an even flow of energy through the day. Don’t get me wrong, I still have my days where I need to nap or do some extra self care! But in general I can feel the difference. 💪🙏🔥 . . A few months ago I bought a sh&t load of chaga from @barefootfive and basically followed her instructions on how she brews her chaga. The awesome thing is that you can brew the same tea over and over until it loses color, so you get a lot of tea from just a few pieces. Slide to next pic for what it looks like 👍 . . "Sometimes life is surreal. When I look at this picture part of me says "yep, that's just me and my girl doin our thing at the cafe!" . . Another part of me feels so deeply content because a dream is realized and we're living it. . . In 2012 something changed as I started to grow a life inside of me (Ezra). Becoming a mother created a ferocious need to do something for my child and for the community that would have a lasting impact. Something that I could contribute to help make a difference. And food is what I know. I've been cooking and making food for people since I was a little girl. It blossomed into something amazing when I realized the right food can be used to heal and balance the body. And beyond that ~ when we are balanced and healthy, we create a world around us that is also balanced and healthy! 🙏🦋🌏 . . This is where the "Enlighten Your Plate" tag came from for the cafe. When you enlighten your plate, you enlighten your life. And when you enlighten your life, you enlighten the planet. This is why I'm not interested in JUST taste when it comes to creating our recipes. It's somewhat easy to make things taste good when you aren't focusing on well-being. To create food that tastes amazing AND supports a healthy body does take some thought, effort and care. This is what @ezrasrawcafe is about. Food that makes people feel better. Food that heals. And writing this, I realize that in creating this vision, I have healed too. I'm so freaking lucky. "I realize I rarely post pictures of my recipe creations in this space so thought I might start sharing more food posts! 🍽 . . A few years ago I dreamed up the Cinnamon Roll recipe we now serve at holiday time at the cafe. We needed more ways to use our almond pulp (left over after making our fresh almond milk). So I created a dough using the almond pulp and I have to say, it’s pretty incredible 😳🙌. The filling is date cinnamon gooey delicious magic. And to top it off, my vanilla cashew frosting and candied pecans 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️ I’m proud of them. And when I see our customers enjoying them, it gives me such pleasure ✨✨✨ . . These days, my focus at the cafe is more on managing, marketing and financials. So I’m not in the kitchen like I used to be. When I do get to create now, I REALLY enjoy it. And one day I’ll get to be in the kitchen more again. For now, I love seeing what our team comes up with - we have such creative amazing folks working for us.
