About Stephanie Fields

Sugarfoot Grits is owned by North Carolina transplant and self-professed "Grits Queen", Stephanie Fields. Her mission is to help San Francisco, and then the world, fall in love with one of the South’s most traditional, comforting, and defining foods: a piping hot bowl of grits. Always a grits lover, the deal was sealed one summer while working at her Uncle White’s (he's the one who christened Stephanie "Sugarfoot") meat-and-three restaurant. Every afternoon he would fix her a bowl of grits, tell her hilarious family stories and secrets, then retire to his kitchen lawn chair for a nap. After moving to SF, Stephanie found it impossible to find a real bowl of Southern grits, let alone on the shelves in local grocery stores. The cry went out and bags began arriving from family and friends in cities all over the South. Running out of shelf space, she started dreaming about a way to bring grits to her new home. After sharing her passion with beloved local music promoter Momos Cheeskos of the Mission, she opened her first series of pop-ups next to Amnesia in the fall of 2012. After being accepted into the La Cocina incubator program in the Spring of 2013, Stephanie has spread the grits love at events across the Bay Area: Eat Real Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, La Cocina's Night Market, and regular pop-up appearances at Dear Mom. She appears every Sunday at Off the Grid: Presidio Picnic.
