Holdfast Dining

Holdfast is a reservation only, pre-fixe, ever-changing, hyper-seasonal dining experience that just so happens to be fun as all get out. Chef Joel Stocks changes the menu weekly, sometimes nightly, depending on what’s best in local produce and seafood. The seating arrangement is around an open kitchen, so you can watch the chefs as they create each carefully crafted course you’re about to partake in. Pay close attention and you may be able to crib some new moves to try at home.

Nostrana

Nostrana, meaning “local” in Italian, is a neighborhood favorite for those seeking rustic, cozy Italian cuisine, that, you guessed it, is made with fabulous local, seasonal ingredients. While the menu changes on the reg, the quality of Nostrana’s cuisine does not: its chefs are married to the integrity inherent in practicing old world techniques. Housemade pasta and pizza are the name of the game here, but check out Fish Fridays, a nod to Italy’s heavily Catholic culture, featuring what’s best in local seafood. The wine menu is a well-curated selection of robust Italian imports and the atmosphere is decidedly friendly and relaxed while still being upscale enough to bring a cute date or cut it up with a favorite homie.

Lardo

With Rick Gencarelli creating the most desirable sandwiches to grab in town, Portland’s infamous obsession with high-quality meats is on glorious display at Lardo. The Korean Pork Shoulder Sandwich with Housemade Kimchi, Chili Mayo, Lime, and Cilantro is recommended by many experts, and frankly makes us what to get on a danged plane to PDX right now. For those lovable vegetarians in your life (come on we’ve all either been one at some point or pretended to be one because we were infatuated with a particularly sexy one, yes, I’m talking to you: Andrew) the You Don’t Know Jack with Buffalo Hot Sauced Jackfruit, Blue Cheese Sauce and Pickled Celery will score major points. With two locations in Portland, you’ve got to try Lardo, and if you can, smuggle us back some sandos on your way out (but not for Andrew, he can get his own damned sandwich).
