There are a lot of "musts" in this world.

And yes, we'll admit it, this list is absolutely littered with them, but we can promise you this: they weren't appointed by a lone critic, or by write-in votes from well-meaning foodies. Instead, The Required is comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from chefs, bartenders, sommeliers, and the like. There's no black box of arbitrary editorial committees or user surveys with obtuse criteria fueling this list: just plain, crave-able truth.
Read on to plan your next trip—or just be sure you've checked all the best boxes on your home turf.

Daikokuya

One of the OG players in the LA ramen scene, Daikokuya is a must-visit when in town. The original is in Little Tokyo, but its popularity has grown so much that it now has five locations sprawled out across the city. Our experts recommend going ahead and adding an egg and some pork belly to virtually every bowl, although, since this IS California, Daikokuya now caters to vegans as well. The long lines are definitely worth the wait and so is the happy hour–Monday through Friday from 3-5pm.

Trois Familia

Trois Familia is a strip mall gem, serving brunch and dinner. This is Chef Ludo Lefebvre’s work, of Petit Trois, in a much more casual atmosphere. Trois serves Mexican dishes filtered through Lefebvre’s lens of French technique. Our experts say to try the brilliant sounding Beef Tartare Tostada, the Hash Brown Chilaquiles, and the Churro French Toast. Make a reservation ahead of time or sip on the house-made Horchata while you wait.

The Corner Door

If you just need a good cocktail, The Corner Door, is the jam for a neighborhood craft cocktail bar, restaurant, and cafe. There is a decidedly chill vibe in this place, with its eclectic décor and sweet hardwood floors: you get the sense that you can just relax. They've got a late night dining menu offering snacks like Pacific Varietal Oysters on the Half Shell, Citrus Peel Wings, and melt in your mouth, roll your eyes back in your head, Short Rib Tacos. Come in for happy hour specials (4-7p daily) or try one of their oh-so-cleverly designed cocktails that correlate with your Zodiac sign.
