There are a lot of "best lists."

And yes, we'll admit it, this list is one of them, but we can promise you this: the picks weren't made by a singularly minded critic, or by write-in votes from well-meaning foodies. Instead, The Required is comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from our expert community. That's 4000+ all-star chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, and more–no black box of arbitrary editorial committees or user surveys here folks, just plain, crave-able cred.

Read on to plan your next trip—or just be sure you've checked all the best boxes on your home turf.

The NoMad Restaurant

Located in the refined NoMad hotel on Broadway and 28th; the NoMad Restaurant serves "casually-elegant" food. Five-time James Beard Award winner Chef Daniel Humm, also the chef at Eleven Madison Park, focuses on flavors he found in Switzerland, California, and New York for this hotel restaurant. The precision of the food is enviable. The flavors are delectable and seasonal. This is the perfect place to “treat yo’self,” meet a client, or go on a date.  No wonder our experts recommended NoMad restaurant as one of their favorite New York establishments.

Balthazar

Located on Spring Street, this expert-favorite looks like a brasserie straight outta Paris. Balthazar is given shout outs by our pros for its overall consistency for cuisine, ambiance, and service. With a to-die-for Raw Bar featuring an array of delicious oysters, you and your dining companion can debate the finer characteristics of Miyagis vs. Blue Points while sipping champagne. Then move on to Provençal classics like chicken and foie gras pâté, steak tartare, and pan-roasted free-range chicken pour deux. At least, that’s how we’d do it.
