There are a lot of "best lists."

And yes, we'll admit it, this list is one of them, but we can promise you this: the picks weren't made by a singularly minded critic, or by write-in votes from well-meaning foodies. Instead, The Required is comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from our expert community. That's 4000+ all-star chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, and more–no black box of arbitrary editorial committees or user surveys here folks, just plain, crave-able cred.

Read on to plan your next trip—or just be sure you've checked all the best boxes on your home turf.

Mission Chinese

Chef Danny Bowien gained fame quickly after being named one of Anthony Bourdain's favorite new chefs. Mission Chinese, located in the Lower East Side, is his take on Szechuan-inspired food. The classics on the menu are the salt cod fried rice, thrice cooked bacon, kung pao pastrami, and General Tso's veal rib. These dishes are meant to be enjoyed family style, so bring your family, or if you’re sick of them, a posse of select friends who are all about doing “sharesies.”

Empellon Taqueria

Empellón Taqueria in the Greenwich Village gets props for being a lesser known, cult-hit amongst our experts. Some of their highest praised offerings are the ceviche, queso fundido and beer-braised tongue tacos. This is a chill place to enjoy a beer, cocktail, and great eats in a casually upscale setting.
