Hello, Austin. Welcome to The Required club.

The Required is our expert version of a "best list," comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from our expert community. That's 5000+ all-star chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, and more–no black box of food editor committees or user surveys, just plain, crave-able cred.

Read on to plan your next trip—or just to be sure you've checked all the boxes on your home turf.

Justine's Brasserie

If you’re looking for the right setting to enjoy cocktails, French bistro fare, and one hell of a back patio, the perfect place is Justine’s Brasserie. Justine’s motto? “When you think you’ve gone too far, keep going.” Indeed this place, whose kitchen is open until 2 a.m., is a Godsend if you want to dine well late night. Its flavors are classically French, with Escargots à la Bourguignonne being one of the most requested dishes: tender and buttery, full of garlicky goodness. Lighter fare includes the refreshing Salade de Crab with English Cucumbers and Mint. If you need something substantial to soak up an evening of Austin style drinking, the Steak Frite will set you straight. Speaking of drinking, Justine’s properly simple, boozy cocktails and impressive wine list make this sexy joint with its decidedly 1930’s Cabaret vibe a great night time hang spot.

Elizabeth St. Cafe

They had us at “Breakfast Banh Mi.” This Vietnamese Café and Boulangerie has deservedly won the hearts of our Austin Experts and locals alike. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week, we’d seriously consider spending an entire day here just to sample the creative, delicious fare like Pork Belly Steamed Buns and Poached Eggs for breakfast, Thai Basil Curry Butter Escargot for lunch, and the Fried Egg, Crispy Pork Belly, Avocado and Mint Banh Mi (don’t forget to add the pâté) for dinner. The full bar means we’ll be ordering a carafe of Strawberries In Siam with Broker’s Gin, Lillet Blanc, and Vietnamese Lemonade. Our Experts aren’t the only ones who know Elizabeth Street Café is a frigging gem, so expect to stand in line, as they only take reservations for parties of eight or more. Or if you’re a total baller, they will rent Elizabeth’s out for private events, in which case just holler in advance so we can clear our schedules and hop on a plane to join you.

Home Slice Pizza

It may surprise you that of the best places to get pizza in Austin, the New York style Home Slice Pizza is a major contender. This pizza joint has managed to impress the locals with its large slices and traditional favorites like Italian Meatball and Cold Sub Sandwiches. With its vintage, yet stylish setting along with the authentic East Coast vibes, Home Slice’s recipe for success and reputation has allowed them to expand into a second popular location.
