Eat Like a Chef at SXSW

With SXSW around the corner March 7-16, we reached out to our chef contributors in Austin to ask the question: Where would you send the bands to eat?

Chef Andrew Wiseheart (Contigo) recommends Oysters at Shoal Creek and crispy pig ears at Winebelly for G Love: "Dear G Love, While you are in Austin, I recommend going to Shoal Creek Saloon for oysters and to Winebelly for the crispy pig ears. Both are great places to hang out and get drunk."

Chef Eric Silverstein (The Peached Tortilla) recommends tonkotsu ramen at Tatsu-Ya for 3LAU: "I'd send 3LAU (he went to the same undergrad as me) straight to Ramen Tatsu-Ya for the tonkotsu ramen. This is the closest ramen I have had to what I grew up eating in Tokyo, Japan. It's a great value at just under $10, and there is something umami about eating a bowl of it."

Chef Philip Speer, (Uchiko, Uchi, St. Philip) recommends the brisket at Franklin Barbecue for Action Bronson: "Action Bronson, a gastronomic lyricist, spends more time eating at restaurants around the world than he does on stage, slanging hard-hitting yet poetic dishes that often refer to truffles, Michelin stars, James Beard, aged vinegars, and exotic ingredients! As an East Coast native, I would love for him to taste some true Texas brisket from an urban street food-style venue that is as relevant to our current food world in Austin, TX and beyond. Action Bronson is to urban street culture what Aaron Franklin is to Austin street food. Boom."

Chef Takuya Matsumoto (Ramen Tatsu-Ya) recommends the tacos at La Mexicana Bakery for People Under The Stairs: "I'd send one of my all time favorite hip hop groups People Under The Stairs to La Mexicana for some tacos. These guys are from LA and the tacos there, from my experience, are more Baja style—it's just different. Dope ass tacos for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night. It's open 24 hours! Plus they have a bakery with fresh churros for days. It's also far enough away from the chaotic SXSW madness, but close enough to not have to stray away."
