There are a lot of "best lists."

And yes, we'll admit it, this list is one of them, but we can promise you this: the picks weren't made by a singularly minded critic, or by write-in votes from well-meaning foodies. Instead, The Required is comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from our expert community. That's 4000+ all-star chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, and more–no black box of arbitrary editorial committees or user surveys here folks, just plain, crave-able cred.

Read on to plan your next trip—or just be sure you've checked all the best boxes on your home turf.

Minetta Tavern

Located at 113 MacDougal St, and established in 1937, with its tin ceiling, black and white checkerboard floor, red leather booths and wood panel bar, Minetta Tavern's ambiance is a jaw-dropper for anyone with a deeply abiding affection for golden era NYC (uh, that would be us). Characters like Ernest Hemingway, E.E. Cummings, and Dylan Thomas were known to frequent this joint back in the day. With dishes like smoked burrata salad, roasted bone marrow, creamed spinach, and bone-in NY Strip, Minetta Tavern offers a combination of contemporary and classic steak house fare. Dress to the nines and pretend you’re living in more glamorous times, or simply come as you are. An evening at Minetta is going to feel both laid back and luxurious. Can we come with? Let us just drop everything–we’ll meet you at the bar for lightly dirty martinis and oysters before we sit down to feast.

Gramercy Tavern

Gramercy Tavern is one of America's most well-known and beloved restaurants and its no surprise that our experts agree. Everything is executed well from the drinks, to the dinner rolls, and to any dessert, but what our pros say sets them apart is the true dedication to excellent hospitality. Don't miss dessert, which has racked up the dish recs from our experts.

Ippudo

Ippudo has helped spread ramen all over the globe and with three locations in Manhattan, you can walk into a communal dining atmosphere, reminiscent of the ramen shops in Japan. Our pros insist that to do ramen right you’ve got to slurp down noodles while rubbing elbows with total strangers. It’s cool, we’re all in this boat together, trying not to get broth all over our pants. Our experts also say: don’t forget to add the pork belly and a soft poached egg to your order.
