Boston. Beantown. The City on a hill. One of the oldest cities in the U.S. Home to some excellent food, and now part of our Required club.

The Required is our expert version of a "best list," comprised of the stand-out restaurants that have garnered the all-time most recommendations from our expert community. That's 5,000+ all-star chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, and more — no black box of food editor committees or user surveys, just plain, crave-able cred.

Read on to plan your next trip — or just to be sure you've checked all the boxes on your home turf.

Santarpio's Pizza

An old school, no-frills pizza joint serving up New York-style pizza since 1933, this place has witnessed and been a part of much of Boston’s history. Our experts say don’t F around, go for either an East coast classic like Italian cheese and hot peppers, or The Works: onions, peppers, garlic, sausage, pepperoni, extra cheese and oh yeah, anchovies. Serving carafes of non-vintage Burgundy and Chablis and domestic macro-brews like MGD and Rolling Rock, it looks like neither Santarpio’s prices, nor their selections have changed in the last 30 years, which in this case, is a thing of beauty.

Shore Leave

A relative newcomer to the South End drinking scene, Shore Leave is already a popular haunt amongst industry stalwarts, in no small part because they serve food until 11 pm, after many dinner services typically end. A tiki-themed bar with Asian-inspired cuisine, our experts recommend the Amaro di Coco cocktail and the cold pork katsu sando.
