A comic for your cocktail.

Shaker Heights is a comic strip inspired by the origin stories of badass cocktails.

This week, illustrator Meryl Rowin reimagines Tim Hagney's Unwritten Law, a seasonal offering at San Francisco's Maven: white ale, reduced with cinnamon and clove, is combined with Asian pear and white rum, then topped with a hop-infused whipped cream. Cozy up to that, why dontcha.

Besides a solid nod to pop-punk, Hagney's creation spun visions of a chilly night in a tavern somewhere. And then we thought, isn't life's true Unwritten Law that one about beer before liquor? You know, the one you never follow and leads to your demise? And so, a cautionary tale was born. With two-headed wraiths.

(Just to be clear, The Unwritten Law of the real world won't kill you. We promise.)

Sometimes, all the little bits of inspiration fluff need time to float together before the liquid magic happens. Just ask bartender Aaron Polsky, who caught glimpses of the cherry blossom-laced TV Swan Dive long before it hit the glass. Shaker Heights is a series devoted to the strange and fantastical beginnings of original cocktails. This episode was directed and animated by Tall Glass with Ice Productions.
