What Is a Chip, If Not For Its Dip?

What Is a Chip, If Not For Its Dip?

An unfulfilled chip, that's what.

This content is brought to you collaboration with our partners at popchips.

Way back at the beginning of the summer, we set chefs all over the country loose on the new popchips ridges with a singular mission:

Create an unforgettable dream dip for a shot at fame, fortune, and perhaps most importantly—eternal bragging rights.

Some chefs went highbrow, others went low; some chefs advocated melty, while others relied on cool and creamy. And now, the judges (who have tossed and turned in their sleep for weeks, tortured with the weight of this final decision!) have spoken. The three semifinalists shall journey to the great metropolis of New York City for a final showdown—only one will leave with the grand prize of $3500.

So, without further ado, meet your champions! Wish them luck, and in the meantime, maybe jack their recipes for your next get-together.

KWAME WILLIAMS, NEW JERSEY

Kwame Williams has the unique ability to both satiate and educate with equal power, which may be why his callaloo dip & black eyed pea hummus caught the panel's eye so flirtatiously. Redolent with comforting coconut and fiery scotch bonnet peppers, Williams's creation exemplifies his signature riffs on Caribbean classics. We'd call this one a 'conversation starter,' but everyone's too busy emptying the bowl to talk much.

STEVE "NOOKIE" POSTAL, BOSTON

Nookie ain't messin' around when it comes to knowing what's good. And what's good, heaped on a sturdy (yet magically light!) popchip? Buffalo chicken dip, that's what. "A classic but so good," he says. Great Hill blue cheese, studded with succulent shreds of rotisserie chicken and a respectable gallon of Frank's Red Hot, because, well, it's the undisputed King of Buffalo sauces. Nookie's gone all in on the timeless trio of bright-tangy-savory, and for that, we wish him the best.

UNO IMMANIVONG, TEXAS

Don't let Immanivong's cheery, laid-back manner fool you: she's one of the fiercest competitors we know, and her nuanced take on a umami-rich mushroom dip has us all forgetting our dip manners over here. Mushroom duxelles, Kasseri cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, chives, and bacon combine in an orderly clash of palate pleasing depth—and we suspect may be even more magnificent in person. Guard your hearts, judges.

The final competition goes down on August 3rd—the winner will appear in an epic video finale befitting the occasion. Stay tuned, popchips and dip fanatics!
